The crew cut some wires putting the holes in for the bollards. These wires are for the runway lights, and will possible be repaired by Saturday by Fort Bragg Elect. This is do to this being a special wire (500 volt) which needs to come from L.A. Also all the weed eating has now been done and I have asked the County to see if they could sweep the tie down area. Dave Thorpe Little River Airport ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Little River Airport Sent: July 31, 1999 2:46 PM To: Tim Scully Cc: Joel; Dick Ahrens; Dave Brewer Subject: Fog Seal Tim Sorry that we did not get to talk about this today. But at this time the "fog seal" is to start on Aug 9, 1999. This will close the Airport for one (1) week. I was told that if word had to be done on Saturday the 14 to get the runway open it would be done. The seal is going to be put down on the runway, taxi way, and the tie down area. So this will mean that we will be closed down for this week. Dave Thorpe Also the runway lights will not be repaired until Monday as there is no safe way to do so until the special wire get here from LA. Also when this repair is made I will mark the location of the repair for use at a latter date. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Little River Airport Sent: August 02, 1999 12:33 PM To: Tim Scully Cc: Richard Gallagher; Joel; Dick Ahrens; Dave Brewer Subject: Sweeping Hi All Just to let you know the County just finished the sweeping of the tie down area, between the hangers, and out in front by Coast Flyers. Also Do not forget that the Airport will be closed down on August 9 a Monday for a week so that it can have the fog seal put down and then stripped Dave Thorpe ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Tim Scully Sent: August 03, 1999 6:40 AM To: 'Heike Arnold'; Tim Scully Subject: RE: Public Resources Committee Meeting - September Thank you for your email. The Little River Airport Advisory committee will make an informal report regarding research being done on the issue of new hangars on the airport: where they might be located, how many are needed and how they might be funded. The outcome we'd like is to get a sense of: - whether County ownership and funding of more hangars is feasable, or if we should focus on privately funded alternatives. - whether there are objections to any of the proposed locations for additional hangars The committee will also suggest that it is time for the Airport Master Plan to be updated, and the committee offers to slowly work on a draft revision to submit to the County. The outcome we'd like is: may we have your approval for proceeding with this work? The non-aviation uses subcommittee is collecting data on possible non-aviation uses of airport land. An example is a proposal from one investor to build a self-storage facility. Can we find out if the County would consider public funding and ownership of such a venture, or should we focus on private funding sources? Does this provide the information you needed? -----Original Message----- >From: Heike Arnold >Sent: August 02, 1999 10:17 AM >To: Tim Scully >Subject: Public Resources Committee Meeting - September > > >Tim - Please note that Supervisor Patti Campbell has scheduled your >item (Little River Airport Status Report re new hangars) for the >September meeting which is scheduled for September 20 at 1:30 p.m. She >would also like to remind you that you are to please bring a summary and >indicate to the committee what type of outcome you expect from the meeting. >If you have any questions, please call at 463-4062. Heike Arnold ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Tim Scully Sent: August 04, 1999 8:51 AM To: 'Stan Townsend'; 'Chuck Boyer' Cc: Tim Scully Subject: land neighboring the airport The parcels of land immediately next to the approach end of Runway 29 (the same ones which have trees penetrating the approach slope), are "for sale by owner". I have a copy of an ad that was posted at the Albion Post Office, which says: "For Sale By Owner: 7 wooded acres Located only half an hour away from the town of Mendocino, the property is 2 miles inland, out of the fog belt and 1/2 mile from the nearest other structure, out near the county airport. There is a primitive well, an extremely rustic cabin and barn are the only structures. The house site is well back from a paved road. An alternate house site on the other side of the road has passed building code requirements. Both have driveways to them. There is a half-acre pnd, a woodlot for firewood, pine, redwood, etc. trees, an apple tree, a rare Dawn redwood (looks like a ceder), a locust tree, high bush blueberries and a spectacular New Zealand Flax. Wild azaleas are beautiful in the spring. This is an excellant investment as the area is a very popular one, rising in value. Most of the inland property is owned by lumber companies or is in state and county parks and nature preserves, severely limiting the amount of land available for private use. The asking price is $200,000 or best offer. (800) 739-5638" I am concerned that some unsupecting person might buy this land and build one or two houses. The land is too close to the airport for this to be a good idea. Is it possible to explore land swaps with the seller, so the County could secure this land? As you know, the Airport Master Plan recommends this. The land is somewhat swamp-like in the winter, by the way. The pond grows to considerably larger than 1/2 acre. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Tim Scully Sent: Monday, August 16, 1999 7:37 AM To: 'Stan Townsend'; 'Little River Airport'; 'Chuck Boyer' Cc: Tim Scully Subject: Runway striping, other Little River issues RUNWAY STRIPING I have been told that the contractor who is striping the runway has a contract which calls for simply replacing the existing markings. I understand why you don't want to displace the Runway 29 threshold (before we have heard from the FAA). But I think it is important that the runway be properly marked as a non-precision instrument runway, even without the displaced threshold. Otherwise we are 100% sure to need to restripe, a needless expense. The Little River Pilot's Association has offered to pay the difference in cost, if necessary, for doing the non-precision instrument striping. Dick Ahrens and Dave Thorpe have worked together to produce a drawing which shows exactly how the striping should be done. I hope you are in favor of this. CRACK SEALING We looked over the work done on the runway and ramp areas. I understand that about 33,000 feet of cracks were sealed, and we are very grateful for this. However, I also understand that this is only about 1/3 of the total footage of cracks. I hope we can work out a plan for sealing the remaining cracks sometime soon! Although I understand that the most serious cracks have been addressed, I expect that the remaining ones will only grow worse as time passes. LETTER TO THE FAA I'd like to know your thinking with respect to writing to the FAA. We have slowly been continuing to survey more trees on the airport, starting to work our way down the sides of the runway. It is clear that there are many hundreds of trees which penentrate the transition areas at both sides of the runway, many by 20 or 30 feet. We need to agree on the long term strategy for dealing with these. Will they be removed, topped or left to grow? I'm sure the answer to this question will affect the letter to the FAA. LAND SWAPS Also, there's the question of parcels 9 and 10, at the approach end of Runway 29. Is there any chance of executing a land swap for these, per the Master Plan? This also would affect the letter to the FAA. Thank you for your patience and attention. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Dave Brewer Sent: Tuesday, August 17, 1999 9:39 AM To: Tim Subject: Question to the County Tim, Following is a draft letter from the Non-Aviation Use Subcommittee to a county person who can answer the question. Feel free to edit it as you see fit. ....................................... The Little River Airport Advisory Committee has a subcommittee which deals with non aviation use of the airport land. The goal is to provide additional income to the county. Keith Paulson has proposed a self-storage facility to be built on airport property. His proposal is summarized in the attachment. It appears to the subcommittee that, if additional income from the property is needed, self storage is a good idea. It will have low impact on the airport neighborhood and it fills a need in the community. We will solicit public input before making a recommendation. But first there is an issue which needs to be addressed. Some members of the committee feel that the county, rather than the private sector, should build projects like this on county land. The purpose of this letter is to find out if the county wants to make the approximately $300,000 investment required. Attachment from Keith Paulson: Proposed Self-Storage for Little River Airport Property Land required: at least 5 acres Location: to be determined. One location off Little River Airport Road west of the airport access road and one location off Albion Airport Road are being considered. Phases: three of 50 storage units each. One phase to be built initially. Others to follow as demand dictates Structure: single story, about 5000 square feet per phase. Approximately 15,000 squarefeet total. Services: electricity and telephone. No water or septic. Security: Fence with telephone based security system. Access roads: Asphalt entry; gravel around the building. Estimated traffic: about 1 « trips per day per phase. About 4 « trips per day total. Construction cost: approximately $100,000 per phase. Approximately $300,00 total Financial return: approximately $10,000 per year per phase. $30,000 per year total ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Little River Airport Sent: Friday, August 20, 1999 7:33 AM To: Tim Scully; Richard Gallagher; Joel; Dick Ahrens; Dave Brewer; Bill Mertle Cc: David Thorpe Subject: LRAP As most of you know the Airport got open yesterday, after about 12:00 Pm. The runway looks good and the new stripping I think is well done, and also looks good. I was able to fly back in from Oakland with Richard Gallagher today and you can really see the Airport with the new seal job. All though this work took a little longer than any of us though, along with some wet weather that put something's off. But over all I think that all in all things worked well. We were able to get the stripping for a non precision. This was with the help of Dick Ahrens, and a County person (Chris Rau) they both worked with me and put a lot of time in to getting this done.
